The prestigious awards, radio's equivalent of the Oscars and the Emmys, recognize radio's outstanding personalities and stations in 22 categories. An independent task force selected the finalists, and ballots were sent to members of the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy in August.
KIHR-AM went on the air in 1951 to serve the Hood River/White Salmon area with the finest entertainment and information possible. The station's hallmark programming includes the Mid-Columbia Today Show weekday mornings from 8 a.m.-9 a.m. Hosted by Mark Bailey and Jeff Skye, it received the Oregon Association of Broadcasters' award for best public affairs program in 2002, and features interviews with newsmakers throughout the region. It also airs on KACI-AM 1300 in The Dalles. KIHR has a long tradition of quality local news, and won the Oregon Associated Press Broadcasters Association Division II award (for stations outside the Portland metro area) for overall excellence in news coverage for both 2002 and 2003. Mid-Columbia Mornings is the centerpiece of that effort, airing from 6 a.m.-8 a.m. on KIHR and KACI-AM 1300 in The Dalles. KIHR also
is the home of Hood River Valley High School football, basketball, baseball,
and softball broadcasts, and the latest in country music. It also devotes
time throughout the day to promoting community events and causes. Columbia Gorge Broadcasters is owned by Greg and Mylene Walden of Hood River.
