Wasco County Garden Tour in The Dalles
“Sun-Splashed and Wind-Washed,” the Wasco County Master Gardener’s Garden Tour, takes place on Saturday, May 31st from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Tickets, $10.00 each, are available at Klindt’s Booksellers in The Dalles and at Waucoma Bookstore in Hood River before the tour, or at each garden on the day of the tour.
Springtime in The Dalles; the sun breaks up the gray winter overcast and the wind blasts away the last of the stale winter air. Underground streams swell with the spring run-off and hillsides near and far green up as most of our annual 14 inches of rainfall awakens the desert soils. And gardeners feel their blood run faster.
This spring we pay homage to the gardeners in The Dalles, those among us who take inspiration from our steep cliff sides, who capture and use the subterranean waters, who laugh in the heightened energy of the wind, whose suntanned faces drink the sun like sunflowers.
On May 31st, Wasco County Master Gardeners, with the assistance of Central Gorge Master Gardener’s from Hood River area, offer a tour of five gardens situated around the “bowl” of The Dalles.
The Long garden, at 2401 Mt. Hood Street, uses its natural slope to display an extended water feature, around which knowledgeable plant people have encouraged the best from a wealth of floriculture.
The Roman garden, at 602 East 8th Street, is among the oldest in The Dalles, where ancient sycamores provide an established ecosystem for a playful and prolific cottage garden.
The Scherzinger garden, at 917 East Scenic Drive, is an astonishing feat of hillside exuberance where art meets architecture under the skilled hands of a Master Gardener.
At the Petersen garden, 2604 Old Dufur Road, a large parcel of land is sculpted to bear orchard fruits, homegrown vegetables, and setting-appropriate trees, shrubs, and flowers.
The Stroh garden, daringly occupying a point-of-the-peak site at 455 East Knoll Drive, fully embodies this year’s theme, “Sun-Splashed and Wind-Washed.” Smiling and happy atop the cliff, this garden serenely displays its beauty amidst harsh winds and rocky soils.
Adding to the attraction of the gardens will be a plant sale, a garden art sale, local musical entertainers, and the famous Master Gardener homemade tastes at the refreshment table. Three educational spots will offer valuable advice about Stabilizing Slopes, Appropriate Tree Choices, and Growing Vegetables in Eastern Oregon.
Come to the tour; celebrate spring; celebrate The Dalles.
